WHY MAINTAIN AN ELEVATOR?

WHY MAINTAIN AN ELEVATOR?

Passengers depend on elevator's safe operation, so it's important that elevators are regularly maintained. Maintenance is required by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, which is the commonly accepted national standard. Many states and cities have enacted laws based on this standard. However, they typically adopt the standard by code year, so the laws may not reflect recent changes to the ASME code.

Failure to properly maintain an elevator is a safety concern. Improperly maintained elevators can stop between floors or the doors may fail to open, leaving passengers stuck inside. Regular elevator maintenance decreases repair costs by both preventing unnecessary repairs and identifying and addressing smaller issues before they become larger. It extends the life of the equipment, saving money in the long run. And it keeps passengers happy, with better response times, smoother rides, and less downtime.

Elevator maintenance, as well as repair, replacement, and servicing is performed by a certified mechanic. Certification ensures that elevator mechanics have the necessary training and work experience to perform the job safely and competently. While each state has its own certification program, most states recognize certification from other states.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN ELEVATOR MAINTENANCE?

Elevator maintenance requirements are driven by the individual elevator manufacturer’s specifications and local code requirements. Elevator maintenance involves cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting each of the elevator’s mechanical parts.

These parts include:

  • Door operator, door interlocks, roller guides â€“ all of which ensure that the doors open and close properly

  • Machine ropes and sheave (traction elevators) â€“ which enable the elevator to move up and down

  • Governor â€“ ensures that the elevator does not exceed a safe speed

  • Brakes and safeties â€“ stop the elevator if power is lost
